They seem to be claiming that they can bring these goals into their lives by thinking. One definition of manifesting I found is:

…to make your dreams, goals, and aspirations a reality by believing you can achieve them.

So evidently, if you seriously believe that you can accomplish your goal, you will accomplish your goal. You’ve just got to put your energy into it. Easy-peasy.

Actually, to my understanding, manifesting isn’t really supposed to be easy. It requires persistence and energy. But if you’ve got the energy, and if you’re persistent enough, then you can manifest your desires.

This idea reminds me of when I had a birthday as a kid. There’d be this big cake with a bunch of candles, and I was supposed to blow them all out. Before I did, I was supposed to make a big wish. So I guess manifesting is like that, but without the cake and candles.

Another thing I’m reminded of is an idea of Robert A. Heinlein:

If you pray hard enough, water will run uphill. If water doesn’t run uphill, then you didn’t pray hard enough.

And that’s really the point. “Life coaches” may natter on about manifesting, how you can do it with effort, etc. When it doesn’t happen, it’s because you didn’t try hard enough. It’s not because the coaches are full of shit.

What I find most objectionable about this notion is that so many people try so hard to “manifest” things, and then blame themselves when their goals aren’t achieved. It’s cruel.

I have long been puzzled by people who say that they’re “manifesting” things – a great job or career, wealth, health, romances, whatever.
