Breaking Things on YouTube

I am getting annoyed at some YouTube authors who create sensationalist thumbnails telling me that someone – or something – has “broken the Internet” or “Broken Science.” Really?

Nothing has broken the Internet, if you’re reading about it while online. The claim is bullshit on its face, and we all know it. I don’t know why authors continue to say stupid things like this, but there we are.

And nothing breaks science, either. There can be discoveries that may require a complete rewrite of current scientific thinking. Possibly well-established theories may need to be revised or abandoned. But this isn’t “breaking” science It’s how properly conducted science works. It’s the failed experiments that can sometimes lead to a paradigm shift, which is how science advances. Nothing gets broken.

This is just another example of sensationalism, some author trying to garner clicks. In fact, these thumbnails and titles often really are clickbait. The content often has nothing to do with the wild claims and (occasionally) garish images. It’s a cheap way to try to get more clicks, and it probably isn’t going to get these authors anywhere they want to go..
