Escalation

There has been a sudden and marked increase in activity by Israel against Hezbollah. Some people are decrying this “escalation.” I think they’re naive and mistaken at best; They may just be lying.

For the past 11 months, Hezbollah has been lobbing missiles and other projectiles into Israel, causing damage and occasionally killing people. Since October 8th, over 9000 such projectiles have been fired. Most were neutralized; many others fell onto uninhabited areas. A few found their mark.

Now, recently, Israel has detonated a few thousand pagers, a few hundred hand-held radios, targeted a meeting of top Hezbollah leaders and neutralized them, and started to vigorously bomb the Hezbollah missile launchers and ammunition sites. There is an outcry among some for Israel to show some restraint, to respond “proportionately.”

The thing is, Hezbollah has been trying to wage a war of attrition against Israel, wear it down by degrees. Never firing an all-out attack, just lobbing missiles at Israel every day. Israel is a small country, and cannot long endure a war of attrition. They need to bring things to an end quickly.

One might ask why Israel is suddenly picking up the pace. Why not months ago? I can’t claim to know, but it would make sense if they had been gathering intelligence on how Hezbollah does things, locating their munitions stores, their missile launchers, maybe meeting places for their leaders. Having acquired this information, now they are in a position to strike, and to hit hard.

Israel cannot benefit from a cease-fire. All that would do would give Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran, and other terrorist organizations time to regroup, and to undo the progress Israel has made. Israel needs to continue, to render Hamas and Hezbollah – and anyone else who attacks – incapable of continuing the fight.

Calls for compromise, for negotiation, are foolish. There is no compromise. Israel was supposed to be guaranteed peace from the last time they compromised. We learned how ineffective that was, on October 7th, 2023.

UN guarantees mean nothing. The border with Lebanon was supposed to be protected by the UN. Instead, Hezbollah took control. They built up a powerful military presence among civilians. They attacked Israel without provocation on October 8th, following the Hamas atrocities of October 7th, 2023. This was a direct result of the UN failing to honor its obligations, and allowing the Hezbollah terror organization to operate.

Calls for moderation are nonsensical and disingenuous. I challenge anyone to tell me their country would calmly accept the unprovoked rape, mutilation, kidnapping, murder, and burning of innocent civilians. I challenge anyone to tell me their country would accept someone firing 9000 missiles at them. I challenge anyone to say that their response would be “measured.”.
